A Japanese restaurant in the cultural centre
Katana is located in the Peruvian-Japanese cultural centre, run by the Asociación Peruano Japonesa, on Avenida Gregorio Escobedo, in the Residencial San Felipe. Peru has a large community of Japanese origin, which arrived from the end of the 19th century; its meeting with Peruvian produce gave rise to nikkei cooking, of which tiradito is the best-known example (see three Lima cuisines).
What you eat there
Classic Japanese cooking, sashimi, nigiri, makis and gyozas, with a few nikkei dishes such as tiradito, and bentos, those trays of small, varied portions. The restaurant does not publish its menu online: ask for the dishes of the day and the prices on site or on its Instagram account.
Practical information
- Address: Peruvian-Japanese cultural centre, Av. Gregorio Escobedo 803, Residencial San Felipe, Jesús María.
- Opening hours and booking: on the restaurant’s Instagram account, the most reliable way to find out which days it is open.
Who it is for
For a traveller who fancies Japanese food, or who wants to understand what the Japanese-Peruvian community has brought to Lima, combining the meal with a walk in the Residencial San Felipe. Jesús María can be reached by taxi from Miraflores; combine it instead with Lince or Pueblo Libre, which are close by.
Our suggestion
A Japanese meal at the heart of Lima’s Japanese-Peruvian community, to combine with a walk in the Residencial San Felipe and a visit to the cultural centre.
What to ask before you go
- The opening hours of the day and the menu with its prices.
- Whether booking is useful at weekends.
