Miraflores is the neighbourhood where most travellers stay: hotels, restaurants, services, seafront. You can spend a whole day here without getting bored, as long as you know what you are looking at, and then use it as a base for the rest of Lima.

In short

Half a day is enough for the heart of the neighbourhood: Parque Kennedy, Larcomar, the clifftop promenade to the Parque del Amor, then Huaca Pucllana. Add Parque Reducto (the 1881 battle) or the Place of Memory for a full day. To stay, the area between Parque Kennedy and the seafront is the most practical; the streets towards Avenida Arequipa or Surquillo are quieter and cheaper.

Understanding Miraflores

The district was created on 2 January 1857 and owes its name to the Miraflores charterhouse, near Burgos, in Spain. Long an area of farms and country houses between Lima and the sea, it became a residential neighbourhood in the 20th century and then the city’s main hotel hub. On 15 January 1881, during the War of the Pacific, the Battle of Miraflores pitted Peruvian troops, including reservists, against the Chilean army, which then took Lima: Parque Reducto No. 2 keeps its memory alive.

Its landscape comes from its location: the neighbourhood sits on cliffs of earth and pebbles that drop into the Pacific. Below, the Costa Verde, a coast road, runs along a series of beaches. Above, the malecón promenade links the parks over several kilometres. It is this line of cliffs, more than the buildings, that gives Miraflores its identity.

Beyond Parque Kennedy: six places to know

Place What you learn there Practical details
Huaca Pucllana The Lima culture (450–650), long before the colonial city daytime visits from 9:00 to 17:00, closed on Tuesdays; night visits from Wednesday to Sunday from 18:30 to 21:00, by booking; 1.8 km, about 25 minutes on foot from Parque Kennedy
Parque Reducto No. 2 The Battle of Miraflores (1881); Andrés Avelino Cáceres museum About 1.6 km east of Parque Kennedy, near the expressway
Lugar de la Memoria (LUM) The period of political violence in Peru in the 1980s and 1990s Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 to 18:00, free entry; Bajada San Martín, above the Costa Verde
Ricardo Palma house museum The writer of the “Tradiciones peruanas”, chronicles of Lima, lived here from 1913 until his death; a museum since 1962 Calle General Suárez 189; on the municipal “Por las tradiciones de Palma” route
Amano museum Peru’s pre-Columbian textiles, in a private museum Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00, Mondays by appointment; S/ 35; Calle Retiro 160
Craft boulevard Crafts from all over the country gathered together, on Avenida Petit Thouars Compare before buying: see Respectful travel

The Place of Memory, Tolerance and Social Inclusion deserves a special mention: it explains the internal armed conflict that claimed tens of thousands of victims in the country. The visit is powerful; it helps you understand today’s Peru and the memory of the Andean regions you may travel through.

The municipality also offers themed routes: in the footsteps of Mario Vargas Llosa, winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, or discovering the old houses of Avenida Arequipa and the sculptures by Peruvian artists in public spaces.

The quintas, Miraflores before the tower blocks

Before the tower blocks, Miraflores was made up of low houses: the single-storey “ranchitos” of the early 20th century, like Ricardo Palma’s house, then the quintas, small groups of houses set along a lane. The city council lists several, including the Quinta Bustos, built in 1935 at number 562 on Avenida 28 de Julio, with its arched doors and moulded frames; others bear the names Prado, Leuro or Reducto (Visita Miraflores). They are homes: admire them from the street.

The sea, from above and from below

The Costa Verde beaches are reached by steep paths down (“bajadas”). The Pacific water there is cold all year round, because of the Humboldt Current, and the waves attract surfers and surf schools. Swimming is not the main attraction: people come to look, walk, or take a surfing lesson with a school. If you want to swim, ask locally which beach has a lifeguard that day.

Three ways to spend the day

Half a day. The walking route below, then lunch near Parque Kennedy: a ceviche at the counter of Al Toke Pez, Calle Manuel Bonilla, or a table from the restaurants section.

A full day. Huaca Pucllana in the morning (the archaeological area has little shade), lunch, then the clifftop route in the afternoon and sunset at the Parque del Amor.

A grey day or a day of garúa. From June to September, the coastal mist often covers the city. Favour the LUM, the Ricardo Palma house or a museum (Larco, MALI) and keep the walk for a clearer afternoon.

Getting around and finding information

  • On foot: the malecón and the streets around Parque Kennedy are easy to walk, and Barranco is 3.6 km, about 50 minutes from Parque Kennedy.
  • The municipal tourist bus, hop-on hop-off, leaves from Parque Alfredo Salazar: for a foreign visitor, S/ 35 for one loop and S/ 95 for the day, ticket valid for 24 hours, from 9:00 to 18:00, according to the city council’s website (Visita Miraflores).
  • To the historic centre: the Metropolitano, from the Ricardo Palma or Benavides stations. See getting around Lima.
  • Tourist information: there is an information centre on Avenida José Larco, block 7, open Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00.

Staying in Miraflores

Area For Against
Between Parque Kennedy and the malecón Everything on foot, airport bus stops More expensive, busy
Around Avenida Larco and Huaca Pucllana Residential streets, neighbourhood restaurants A little further from the sea
Towards Avenida Arequipa and Surquillo Cheaper, close to the Surquillo market and buses to the centre Noisy avenues, fewer walks

The rest of the criteria (humidity, noise, hot water, windows) are detailed in Where to stay in Lima.

Frequently asked questions

What can you do in Miraflores in a day?

In the morning, Huaca Pucllana; at midday, lunch near Parque Kennedy; in the afternoon, the clifftop walk to the Parque del Amor and sunset over the Pacific. If the sky is grey, add the LUM, Ricardo Palma’s house or the Amano museum.

Can you swim in Miraflores?

The Pacific is cold there all year round, because of the Humboldt Current, and the Costa Verde beaches at the foot of the cliffs mainly attract surfers. If you want to swim, ask locally which beach has lifeguards that day.

Is Miraflores a good area to stay in?

It is the simplest base for a first stay: hotels, restaurants, services and the seafront on foot. The streets towards Avenida Arequipa and Surquillo are quieter and cheaper; for the historic centre, allow half a day.

How do you get from Miraflores to the historic centre?

By Metropolitano, from the Ricardo Palma or Benavides stations, to Jirón de la Unión, Colmena or Estación Central; or by app taxi, outside rush hours.

Do you need to be careful in Miraflores?

The usual precautions are enough: keep your phone away from the edge of the pavement, where snatching happens, stick to well-lit, busy promenades in the evening, and take a booked taxi when you come back late.

From Parque Kennedy to the Parque del Amor, along the cliffs

A loop of about 4 km, flat, on pavements and promenades. In the morning, the coastal mist can hide the sea; the afternoon and sunset are often clearer.

  1. Start Parque Kennedy

The district’s central park, with its benches, its cats and the Virgen Milagrosa church. It is Miraflores’ landmark; Avenida Larco leads off towards the sea.

  2. About 1.3 km Larcomar

A shopping centre carved into the cliff, on the site of the former Parque Salazar. People come for the view more than for the shops.

  3. Next Malecón

The promenade follows the top of the cliffs to the north-west, above the Costa Verde, the coast road that runs along the beaches below. Paragliders take off in good weather: tandem flights are booked on the spot, so ask for the operator’s licence and check your insurance.

  4. About 1.4 km Parque del Amor

Lima’s most photographed park, with its large sculpture of an embracing couple and its mosaic benches.

Your choice: Carry on to the La Marina lighthouse and the Raimondi and María Reiche parks (about 1.6 km more), which the municipality includes in its “Ecological Miraflores” route.

  5. Return Avenida Diagonal

Head back up to Parque Kennedy along Avenida Diagonal and its restaurants.

Accessibility
The malecón promenade is flat and continuous; only the paths down to the beaches have steep slopes or steps.
Safety
Keep your phone put away near the edge of the pavement, where bag and phone snatching happens; in the evening, stay on the well-lit, busy promenades.

Times of day are only a guide, suggested to help you organise the day: they are neither guaranteed timetables nor visits already on sale. Check opening hours, access and travel times for your dates.
