Surfing
Surfing in the north: fewer bases, more sessions

A tour of five beaches gives the impression of having covered the north, but takes away a good part of your time in the water. These three programmes keep to two bases at most, chosen according to level, season and those who do not surf.
- Length
- 9 days, 8 nights (variants of 7 to 9 days)
- In the country
- 9 days, 8 nights, including 1 transfer day
- Pace
- Slow: two bases, one transfer day, days decided each morning according to the sea
- Regions
- North coast
Who is it for? Independent surfers for the main programme; beginners and mixed groups in the variants.

Indicative season, forecast for the day
Two different pieces of information, not to be confused:
- The indicative season, for choosing your dates: in Huanchaco, the wave is at its most consistent from April to October, with swells of 1 to 3 metres, according to Save The Waves; in Chicama, the best period runs from Holy Week to September, the southern winter. Out of season, these waves can stay flat for several days.
- The forecast for the day, for choosing the session: the height, period and direction of the swell, the wind, the tide, published by forecasting websites and read by the school or the local surfers. It decides in the morning what you do.
No published season guarantees a wave on a specific date. See five words to understand a wave.
The independent programme: Huanchaco, then Chicama
| Nights | Base | Why here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 3 | Huanchaco | A left-hand point break in the centre of the village, visits if the sea is flat, 17 km from Trujillo airport |
| 4 to 7 | Puerto Malabrigo (Chicama) | One of the longest left-handers in the world, which only works with a swell |
| 8 | Lima | Being close to the international flight |
Total: eight nights. The water is cool at both bases, from 17 to 22 °C in Chicama: a full wetsuit is the rule. The port of Chicama is very quiet: a companion who does not surf soon gets bored there, hence the variants below.
When to change base, and when to stay. Stay if the wave at your base is working and suits you. Change if the forecast announces several days without swell for your spot, if your level lets you move on to a more demanding wave, or if a companion needs something else. Do not change just to “see one more beach”.
Days without waves
| Base | What you can do |
|---|---|
| Huanchaco | Chan Chan, the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna, central Trujillo, the caballitos de totora when the fishermen come back |
| Chicama | El Brujo and the Cao museum, less than an hour away; the point and the historic pier of Pacasmayo, further north on the road to Chiclayo |

The board: flight, road, accommodation
- By plane: sports baggage is often charged extra, at a price that varies depending on the airline; check it before buying the ticket, and bring a hard board bag.
- On the road: ask for a vehicle that accepts boards, on the roof or inside; do not put them in the hold of a bus without a bag.
- At the accommodation: lockable storage, a tap for rinsing.
- Without a board: the schools and rental shops at both bases offer them; check their condition before paying.

Beginner variant: a week in Huanchaco
| Day | Programme | Night |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Flight to Trujillo, settling in | Huanchaco |
| 2 | Lesson in the morning, beach in the afternoon | Huanchaco |
| 3 | Lesson, then Chan Chan | Huanchaco |

| 5 | Lesson, or rest | Huanchaco |
| 6 | Lesson, then central Trujillo | Huanchaco |
| 7 | Flight to Lima, departure |
A school chooses the beach that suits the swell and your level each morning. Ask how many students per instructor, how long you spend in the water, and what happens if the sea is not suitable. See school, rental or guide.
Mixed group variant: Los Órganos or Máncora
For a group where not everyone surfs, the warm water of northern Piura changes everything: you can swim, watch the wildlife, and the surfers have their waves.
| Day | Programme | Night |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Flight to Talara, road to Los Órganos or Máncora | Coastal base |
| 2 | Surfers in the water; the others on the beach | Coastal base |
| 3 | The green turtles of El Ñuro, together | Coastal base |
| 4 | Surfing; Vichayito for the others | Coastal base |
| 5 | Whale-watching trip, from July to the end of October; otherwise, rest | Coastal base |
| 6 | Surfing, or a day in Lobitos for the surfers | Coastal base |
| 7 | Flight to Lima | Lima |
| 8 | Buffer |
The water there reaches 24 to 26 °C from December to May, 21 to 23 °C the rest of the year. See the beaches compared.
What to arrange in advance
- The Lima–Trujillo flight, outward and return, with the price of sports baggage if you bring your board: it varies between airlines and flights.
- Accommodation, in Huanchaco and then in Puerto Malabrigo: board storage, rinsing, distance to the peak.
- Transport between the two bases and to the airport, with a vehicle that accepts boards.
- A school or a guide if you want one: number of students per instructor, equipment included, postponement if the sea is not suitable.
What this route leaves out
- Lobitos and Máncora, far to the north: another week, or the variant for a mixed group.
- The very big waves of Pico Alto, south of Lima, for specialists only.
